Theme 4: Mysticism, Astrology and Magic

This session aims to discuss occult sciences in the Ottoman society and traces its different cultural relations. Therefore, this theme may include the following questions:
- What was the importance of astrology, divination and magic at the Ottoman court?
- How did the identity of actors influence the history of the transfer of texts, techniques and practices between the different professional elites from the 14th to the 18th century?
- What were ways of disseminating transcultural knowledge about the stars, adaptations, and assimilation?
- Which transmission channels between the Chinese, Safavid, Ottoman and Mongol courts and their legacies played a role in the production and circulation of the occult sciences?
- What is the role of Sufi networks and spaces in the production and circulation of astronomical and astrological knowledge?
